Thoughts From a Brilliant & Legendary Chief-of-Department....

Chief (and later Fire Commissioner) Augustus Beekman

The men who enter the New York City Fire Department are recruited from a base population of ten million people to a protective service that has been identified as the most sought after job title in the civil service, one that attracts men from other municipal agencies, as well as from private industry. The department justifiably assumes that the capability potential of firefighters is well above average.

Similarly, the men who are promoted to the officer ranks are distilled from the base roster of eleven thousand firemen. The department credits them with being capable of accepting any challenge which these ranks present.

However, society has learned through the experience of centuries that human nature resists performing up to maximum potential without the influence of motivating or compelling forces. In the Fire Department such forces are expressed in the form of recruitment and promotion standards, the administration of competitive examinations, and the recording of comparative performance ratings.

Utilization of these procedures has enabled the City of New York to develop and maintain a professional fire protection force o9f outstanding quality, one that services a metropolitan area whose population, as well as construction and occupancy complexities, are more than double those of any other city in the United States.

As an additional by-product, the dedication and search for excellence necessary for entrance into, and advancement within the department has motivated men to broader self-development in a wide range of academic and professional fields.

The conclusion can therefore be drawn that any pressures applied by the Fire Department are designed to propel men forward rather than to hold them back.

About Last Night.....

Last night's meeting was the biggest we've had to date- approximately 170 people turned out in support and to meet our Division and Battalion Representatives (see attached list). The few remaining unfilled spots will be filled soon so if you would like to throw your hat in the ring let us know ASAP.

We believe our continued growth is testament not only to our efforts and message, but a reaction to the attempts to censor us. We would ask, then, that the would-be censors keep up the good work!

We opened the meeting by presenting a plaque to Keith Sullivan of our law firm, Sullivan and Galleshaw, in appreciation for all the work they have done-at no charge- over the past two years. I can't say it enough- these guys deserve the lion's share of any credit for any success we've had. Their help has been invaluable and contact info for them is available on our site.

One of the main themes of the meeting was advice about standing up for equal treatment- how you can't leave it to the other person, or worry about retaliation or repercussions. Sheep get sacrificed. At the risk of sounding overly pompous, we have the truth on our side and the truth will prevail when there are pains to bring it to light.

Sadly, none of our opponents, critics or doubters accepted our invitation to attend and address us. They should know that they can submit an Essay detailing how wrong we are at any time, and we are available to debate whenever asked. We will not respond to censorship with censorship; in fact we are eager to hear and distribute an explanation for the premise that reading comprehension ability is not required for firefighting if someone would only provide one.

We were pleased that guests from Newark (Danny Farrell) and Camden (Danny Stratton) were able to make it. In addition, candidates from List # 6019 and a few who took the current test (#2000) were there. These groups have been very helpful to us and we hope we have been of help to them.

As we said at the meeting, please access our website and utilize the facts, figures and arguments presented there. Write letters to newspapers, contact government officials and help us spread our message. If you have any media contacts put us in touch with them- no outlet is too small or too big. Also buy our t-shirts (they have been called the finest in firefighting fashion) and continue to be our eyes and ears.

At this meeting we also introduced our Board and our Division and Battalion Reps. They are:

Meeting Reminder....

Our next meeting is a few days away:

Tuesday, April 24 7:30 pm

Connolly’s Corner

71-17 Grand Avenue

Maspeth, NY 11378

www.connollyscorner.com

Please get there early as we want to start on time. A lot of topics are going to be covered: our new Division and Battalion Reps; the importance of getting involved and speaking up and demanding equal treatment; what has happened and is happening in other cities; what has happened and is happening in NYC; the ongoing efforts to censor us (efforts that we hope continue as they are helping us almost beyond measure); the new test and, of course, we will welcome questions from the floor.

We also welcome and encourage any and all that disagree with us to attend. You will be able to speak at any time and will not be censored, treated with disrespect or threatened with retaliatory complaints for expressing reasonable and well thought out positions. Since we have not yet received even one Essay explaining why we are wrong (and it’s been a year and a half already), nor have we been invited to debate (after making it clear we are eager to), we are concerned our opponents are not confident their opinions can stand up to scrutiny. We ask that they please show up and try to disabuse us of this notion.

Hope to see you at the meeting, and please remember to keep Lt. Nappi and his family in your prayers during this difficult time.
